Hypertrophy Ventricular hypertrophy is an increase in the size and mass of the involved ventricle. This can be a normal response to cardiovascular conditioning as occurs in athletes and enables the heart to pump more effectively. http://www.cvphysiology.com/Heart Failure/HF009.htm |

Left
Ventricular Hypertrophy Echocardiographic studies have enhanced our understanding of the etiology of hypertensive LV hypertrophy and dysfunction in epidemiologic studies over the past two decades. Echocardiography provides visualization of structural or functional abnormalities which appear long before the detection of overt clinical disease. http://www.sph.uth.tmc.edu/hgc/fbpp/techSigLVH.htm |

Left Ventricular Hypertrophy Chronic elevation of myocardial stress due to pressure overload, as in hypertension or aortic stenosis, causes cardiac muscle to hypertrophy with a resulting increase in myocardial thickness. http://www.echoincontext.com/int2/skillI2_02.asp |

Lesson VIII - Ventricular Hypertrophy The ECG criteria for diagnosing right or left ventricular hypertrophy are very insensitive (i.e., sensitivity ~50%, which means that ~50% of patients with ventricular hypertrophy cannot be recognized by ECG criteria). However, the criteria are very specific (i.e., specificity >90%, which means if the criteria are met, it is very likely that ventricular hypertrophy is present). http://library.med.utah.edu/kw/ecg/ecg_outline/Lesson8/index.html |
