eMedicine - Aneurysm, Abdominal Article by Robert E O'Connor
Aneurysm, Abdominal - Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a relatively common, potentially life-threatening condition. It has a wide spectrum of presentations and should be considered in the differential diagnosis for a number of symptoms. AAA is usually the result of degeneration in the media of the arterial wall, resulting in a slow and continuous dilatation of the lumen of the vessel. In fewer than 5% of cases, AAA is caused by mycotic aneurysm of hematogenous origin. Read more about it on eMedicine.com from WebMD.

VascularWeb Aortic Aneurysms AVA Screening Program
Aneurysms occur most often in the aorta, the main artery of the chest and abdomen. The aorta carries blood flow from the heart to all the vital organs and eventually to the legs and feet. Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are caused by a progressive weakening of the aortic wall that causes a dilation, or “ballooning” of the vessel. The aneurysm will grow larger and eventually rupture if it is not diagnosed and treated. Read more about it on VascularWeb.org.
